Before getting diagnosed with this stupid cancer, I used to give blood 2 times per year when my iron level was high enough to do it. I used to give blood for 2 reasons:
1- because it really helps people that need blood
2- to overcome my fear of needles
What it gave me in return:
1- I helped to save lives...
2- The needles used for blood donation are the biggest used, so during chemo I wasn't scared anymore LOL
I told you this because at his last session, my friend Bruno needed platelet. The kind of platelets that you give at the same time you give blood at the Globule center. With those platelets, he was ready for this week's chemo, where he will stay 4 days at the hospital, because in his case, having a treatment later means more costs and losing a week under his medical insurance that will expire in December 2014.
I heard about Mai Duong, a Vietnamese mom who need a donation of stem cells to fight leukemia and live, for the joy of her 4 years old daughter and the rest of her family and friends. There is no enough donors from the minorities like Asians, Latinos, Haitians, etc. It's my goal to encourage more people in my circle to give their umbilical cords, blood, stem cells, etc. To help people fight diseases, save lives, and get rid of all the myths about blood donation.
You will see how positive it is to give blood, me for the moment I cannot and I feel hopeless, I feel like I don't do enough to be a good human!
PS: In other countries, you have to pay to RECEIVE blood, stem cells, etc. You have to take advantage, we don't pay for it, and we really don't know when we will need it...
